The
registered Horned Hereford cattle at Bar-N consist of 150 brood females.
The purebred herd has been built up using an intensive embryo transplant
program to build
up a female base from the superior
cows they already own. These cows produce bulls from which the very
elite individuals are offered for sale as seedstock and the remaining
bulls are kept to use within the commercial herd. The Bar-N Ranch has
opportunity to test the genetics of their registered herd on a large
scale. By running some of their own bulls on the commercial
herd, they can view the impact their breeding choices make in the
cow-calf business.
To
service both the purebred and commercial
herds approximately 90 purebred Hereford bulls are "Mountain raised
and Mountain ready". Senior bulls are put out to pasture and
fed hay during the winter months. They are brought in towards late January
or early February and started on grain to bring them up to good, hard
shape for breeding. The yearling bulls are fed a 10 pound grain ration
along with free choice hay during the winter. All bulls are fertility
tested in the spring before they are turned out. When selecting new herd
sires, many criteria are taken into consideration, such as favorable birth
weight statistics and EPD's. Smooth shoulders and extra rib in a calf
will result in an animal that is 50 pounds heavier at weaning. Spread
over a herd, that can make a considerable difference at sale time in the
fall.
